TASK 4 FINAL

The ACTUAL CONTEXT (sedentary)
The context or “field of operation” is made of a set of physical conditions drawn from a site or place to form an operating ground for architecture process.
Today, the traditional fieldtrip to an actual site means more than simply observing context and conditions.
The circumstances of a place, region or culture also play an equally important role.
On our site, for example, the relationship between the university and
the city is a critical component.

The POETIC EVENT (nomadic)
This phenomenon of events is defined as a series of repetitive non-uniform actions. A constant variation of interacting components occurring on the site, and defined by timelines and spaces. The analysis of the site is your opportunity to discover those singular occurrences.

From a systematic re-reading of the site using a pre-set system of operations, we must re-write and re-interpret it. This process includes a re-representation of the given architecture concept of form and program.
As it emerges, the architecture itself begins to delineate a 3rd condition: BECOMING allowing the work to exist in a state of perpetual transformation that continues after its conception and inevitable completion. (Source: Asymptote)

Making architecture is ultimately (and in part) a poetic act, yet one that must be accomplished using physical elements
(structure, light, form…) while taking into account more conceptual factors such as events and occurrences.

When observing these events and filtering them through a unique point of view or concept, more complex operations come into play:

Transitions – Variations – Mutations.

This methodology allows you as designer to perceive architecture differently, to discover and expand its meaning beyond simple formal expressions.
New program types, new spaces and new ideas can be construed from the relationship between form, function and event. These may also suggest a transformation in the nature and use of a site and the way we read and understand it.

RE-ORGANIZE – RE-INVENT

The architecture you create should function as an autonomous entity and yet at the same time, be fully integrated in the existing context. Conceptually and physically your architecture must be present both as a Temporary (Nomadic) and Permanent (sedentary).
Temporary: As previously mentioned, the temporary/nomadic should capture a fleeting moment, a predetermined set of events.
Permanent: Can be a trace left behind, it can serve as anchor or beacon, or it can simply be defined as tool for restructuring the (existing) site in anticipation of the Temporary.

Can form, function and event be fully integrated?
Can Architecture be envisioned as an interface between those elements?
Can Architecture adapt itself? Can it mutate, transition or vary in response to a flux in the external conditions?

Site/Requirements:
Boundaries: University Ave. between 19th street and Broadway St. The outer edge of the site is limited to the first row of building on the East and extends 25ft beyond the sidewalk on the West (grass area).

Program/Profile:
This Task requires you to look at architectural form as “Performance” and integrate your current concept into the design and the fabrication process.
You must develop a program of “spectacle” and select a specific type of event/show:

CONCERT THEATER DANCE

Profile the performance:
• Select a performer and create a detailed profile. Define/ describe the main character(s) and the type of performance in detail.
• Define/describe the space requirements for the performance.
• Establish a complete schedule for the show by setting up the main event schedule.
• Organize and outline the chronology of events and the specific staging sequence (this will vary depending on the type of show you have selected).
• Define/describe the spectators (type/numbers/spatial requirements/viewing requirements/Other.
• Include any additional information you find relevant to the profile.

Modules:
Task3 site analysis (2 parts- team and individual)
Task4 Research – Profile – Program
Task5 Design – Modeling – Film
As part of your final presentation, you must make a movie.
Movie should record and document the process you went through during the semester (design process, site analysis, concept, research and production of work)
Physical Models, Computer Models, Drawings, production, performance and event must be included in this film.
You must tell a story and filter your point of view (scenario) through one overall concept/idea.
We will discuss this in class.
